“Tech”-tonic Shifts

1/23/2023

The big news so far in 2023 is the layoffs occurring at large companies, most notably large corporations in the Tech Sector.

It’s not because these companies aren’t able to continue employment of those who were laid off.

Sitting on billions of cash.

But stock prices are low.

And publicly traded companies always have and always will make corrections to meet the expectations of the shareholders.

Laying off workers.

Re-setting.

Selling their stories to investors, that the changes made will lead to driving up the stock prices.

Repeat.

Indefinitely.

It’s not so much a reminder that “Trees Don’t Grow to the Sky”.

It’s more so for those searching for new careers, that if something is too good to be true from a salary and stock options perspective.

It just may be.

It may not last.

Of the six primary components of employment (C-L-A-M-P-S; Challenge, Location, Advancement, Money, People ‘Culture’, Stability), the attitudes of the past three years focused primarily on location (work from home) and money.

Demands from candidates and sometimes concessions from companies that I had not seen in my prior 22 years at SCN.

The tide has turned a bit.

Stories shared of the horrific pain realized by humans who have lost their position is real.

These stories are particularly biting, because of the insensitive nature of the layoff announcements (passwords changed, and notifications done through text or email).

My advice to candidates searching for opportunities is simple.

The market is shifting.

But there still are plenty of incredible opportunities for people who are talented and motivated.

Consider a move a bit more towards stability and culture, and fair compensation packages that make ‘Midwestern Sense’.

Look for opportunities to build a career and for managers who will develop you, and make you better.

This formula always works.

Regardless of what may be happening in the hiring market.

Happy Monday.

Make it a great day!
