Short-Term / Long-Term Career Planning

10/15/2024

It’s always refreshing seeing new people enter into the industries within which we work. Smart intelligent people, with a bright future and ideas to impact the companies and the industry.

EARLY CAREER:
Big Companies hire people out of college, and train and develop them. People leave, to go work for smaller companies where they have more of a voice and impact.

MID-CAREER:
People change jobs a few times, for more money or advancement opportunities.

LATE CAREER:
Some people hang on, and retire with grace. Many get bumped out when compensation exceeds their value to the market.

Early and mid-career people usually find a place to land if they offer skills the market demands.

It’s much harder to survive now later in a career.

The amount of ‘layoffs’ of talented people later in their career is difficult to comprehend.

My best recommendation regarding your career choice, is to always think short-term and long-term.

See if you have a line of sight on a position, or a company, where you can survive during the later years of your career.

If you find this, you’re doing better than most, stability at a premium.

It’s not easy to do, especially if reacting to your environment, but thinking short-term / long-term, is the best way to plan a career.

It’s getting a bit crisp here in SE-MI. 38-51, and some splashes of rain.

Make it a great day, everyone!
