Playing the Game … or No?
9/12/2023
If you are a hiring manager, it’s easy to lose sight of how important your role is in attracting talent.
We had a candidate back off of an offer that was 20% higher in compensation and better for an overall career path, because he felt the manager looked unhappy during the interview process.
It could be any one of a million things that caused this read.
Is upper management the reason why the manager is unhappy?
Is the manager in the wrong position because of the stress of the job?
Did the manager just have a bad day?
Something else?
In this particular case, we lost the placement … and the candidate opted out of a better career opportunity … because of the read on the manager.
Got me thinking.
If someone is unhappy in their role and they represent the company in hiring or selling, there are two choices:
1. Bring the A-Game … even if it’s just for show
Or
2. Act as you are … no faux appearance … the buyer either likes it or not … but the read is real … authentic … and that’s what matters most …
Should acting and putting on appearances be a part of business?
Or is it best to not put on appearances … it is what it is .. your call if you want to be a part of it or not?
Play the game … or no?
