Managers aren’t the only ones who should be developing business plans at this time of the year for their team.
Individual contributors, and anyone who works under a manager at any level should be in a position to have conversations about their future within the organization and have an opportunity to plan as well.
Planning Up.
Here are the Key Points:
1. How is your employer doing financially?
2. What are the plans for you, within the organization … if any? Does their vision match your expectation?
3. What specific metrics or MBOs do you need to achieve to maintain employment … or grow?
4. What support or tools do you need to hit your targets for 2024 … and are these currently in place?
Then … if you are valued, you like what you do, and you like the organization and the people you work with …
5. How can you get more return on your time invested … without pushing it too far so that your sustainable employment becomes questioned … and what opportunities do you have to receive more return based on XYZ factors?
Here are some other best practices for meetings with your ‘one-up’:
1. Hold your position … but don’t complain … offer solutions or ideas instead.
2. Make sure you understand all particulars of your current situation .. before you start asking questions about things you already know .. (or should know).
