Guilty Until Proven Innocent ….
8/12/2024
WFH, work from anywhere, is here to stay.
The convenience for managers to pop in and check on someone, is far surpassed by the employment benefits of working from anywhere.
However, managers are still accountable for progress in their departments. They expect communication and updates proportionate to the nature of the work.
Urgent projects or client facing projects … Multiple updates are required, beginning of day plans, and end of day reports are the the norm.
Longer range projects or internal projects … A couple of updates a week should suffice.
Manager calls, leaves vm … A return call within the hour should happen.
Because managers can’t pop over and physically see someone working …. if you don’t communicate internally, then it could be assumed you are not working.
Guilty until proven innocent.
The rebuttals:
“just hire good people and let them do their jobs” …
“I don’t want to be or need to be micro-managed” …
“I need to be left alone, so I can do my work without interruption” …
These sentiments are true for most good employees.
However, as we learn together in the post-covid era, we should learn this above all else … over-Communication is the best way to survive together with remote work arrangements …
Give 80, expect 20.
Constant communication is the bedrock of remote work arrangements.
Last note: Healthy organizations … communication goes both ways … managers should try to over-communicate with their team …
Should I do a better job communicating?… probably so … we all can …
Until then … guilty as charged.
I’m going to work on it!

Make it a great day, everyone!
