Big Swing .. homerun … or miss?

2/18/2025
Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JP Morgan made some comments this past week that hit the news waves.
A harsh opponent of remote work.
The biggest challenge I have from a business leader perspective with Dimon’s comments, is that he put the blame game on his managers for not operating properly with remote work during Covid and thereafter.
They didn’t have the right management systems in place to track accountability, with remote work.
That’s on him, and his leadership team … no?
‘A Players’ are going to produce whether they are remote, or in office.
So bringing them from remote into the office 5 days a week, will undoubtedly motivate some of these A Player workers to leave the company.
So what does that accomplish?
Losing ‘A Players’ is never the way.
Will there be benefit in having undisciplined or unmotivated employees, work in the office regularly?
There probably will be some benefit here.
But now we’re talking about a mass strategy to focus on undisciplined and unmotivated people?
Good companies, and modern leaders realize that 2025, is not 2020, 2015, or 1980.
Technology is in place for people to be effective working remotely, and it’s also in place to properly measure and hold people accountable, regardless of where they sit.
None of this is to be confused with the irreplaceable benefits of having an entire team in the office, under the same roof, if working on group projects where constant collaboration and feedback is needed, or if leaders and managers need to be under the same roof for thought share, or for the development of new employees, etc.
It’s also not to be confused with having people come into the office for 1 or 2 or even three days a week, in a hybrid schedule.
This wasn’t Dimon’s posit though.
But hey, he gets paid the big bucks, and can call his shot.
From the cheap seats way over here in SE-MI, I think he’s missing the mark.
“Hey Dimon .. what are you swinging at …….”.
0 – 15 degrees, and some sun peaking through this am. The cold streak continues. Snow everywhere.
Make it a great day, everyone!
