Another Wrinkle – Remote work

11/19/2024

A candidate was mentioning to a recruiter of ours his desire to leave his current position. She was a remote worker and didn’t like the management emails she was receiving from her manager, they were impersonal.

Interesting.

The quick take here, is that perhaps this manager was sending stuff over email, that should have been handled with a live conversation.

So obviously, it’s critical if you are a manager, or in a position of influence, to not just ’email’ something if it could cause alarm to the receiving party.

But there is context needed now as well from receivers of emails who are working remotely.

Because all of the soft nuances of communication, that we used to take for granted with in-person work are gone forever if people are working remotely.

Fist bumps and a facial expressions are not part of the message when explaining how something went sideways. There is no positive transfer of human energy, F2F.

Let’s not assume the person sent the message with attitude with written words only, over email, or text.

It’s just part of the remote world that we need to accept and adapt to … the personalized touches in communication are significantly ‘less’ in a remote world.

And that’s ok, just another part of the trade off.

Now Zingers over e-mail … that’s another conversation!
