AI Turmoil, or Settled Back In?
11/29/2023
Just when it seemed that the wild world of AI had settled down, it became more disrupted.
I recently shared, how Sam Altman was fired from OpenAI, and then hired by Microsoft a few days later.
The Board at OpenAI has since been re-shuffled.
And first order of business for the new board (that includes former US Treasury Secretary and Harvard President, Larry Summers) … was to re-instate Sam Altman as CEO.
(Quick side note on Summers … he’s an economist and has a storied pedigree, but was frequently wrong about things economically … he doesn’t know ‘Tech’, so he’ll likely will be a ‘yes person’ for OpenAI investors, most notably Microsoft which has 49% of the holdings).
So in a matter of a few days …
Altman was fired from OpenAI.
Hired at Microsoft as a direct employee.
Then back to CEO of OpenAI under a new board.
Nice validation that humans are still in charge after all … emotions … personalities … egos … ideas … power.
And … money.
Especially since Microsoft has the largest ownership percentage in OpenAI … Satya Nadella wants nothing more than to have OpenAI’s tech be a profit machine for Microsoft.
Also, here is another wild development in the tech world that is a source of the turmoil.
A conflicting philosophical movement.
As conflicting as Republicans v. Democrats ..
Yankees v. Red Sox
UM v tOSU ….
Effective Altruism v. Effective Accelerationism.
Effective Altruism
Optimize the benefits of AI for humanity … cautious advancement of AI.
The most notable spokespeople being Crypto Fraud Sam Bankman-Fried.
Elon Musk claims to be this, but it’s hard to pin him down in believing in any type of ideal outside of what benefits him personally.
There is a growing group in positions of power in Silicon Valley who consider themselves to be in this camp.
Put some guardrails in place, to make sure that AI doesn’t destroy society.
Effective Accelerationism
They want rapid AI innovation, and commercialization for $.
Sam Altman is considered to be in this camp.
Satya Nadella seemingly is.
Hard core accelerationists, want the AGI systems to get here ASAP … and disrupt society like never before.
So there you have it.
A lot of human emotion.
Some hint of conspiracy and corruption.
And as always, huge $ at stake.
And a bunch of extreme, hyper rational techies … in the midst of a power struggle over the latest game changing technology.
Kind of like a sci-fi ‘General Hospital’ …
Or maybe it’s just the Tech World as we know it.
R.E.M’s “It’s the end of the world as we know it” … sure seems appropriate …
The AI Tech that is in the works will change things dramatically …
But do we, ‘feel fine’ about it … as R.E.M does?
Time will tell.
27-46, sun, clouds.
Make it a great day, everyone!
