Consumer Electronics – Piezoelectric applications in Active Noise Cancellation

Brendan Moriarty recently connected with Suraj Raval Graduate Research Assistant in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Suraj discussed some of the novel research he has conducted in the area of Active Noise Control in meta materials using Piezoelectrics.

“I have always been amazed by piezoelectric materials! The fact that it can change it’s mechanical stiffness, just by changing the electrical boundary conditions, has opened up endless useful applications. These applications range from reducing drag, cooling of microchips (by using them in synthetic jet actuators) to building soft-wired systems, wherein we can change the propagation of acoustic waves in a medium, just by turning some voltage governing knobs (active vibrations control in headphones, airplanes, submarines, etc.).”

The advancements in Active Noise control within the Consumer Electronics space, will result in great product options for consumers!
