Security Advances

12/19/2023

As technology continues to progress at a rapid pace, one of the main points of contention among users is their privacy. With corporations selling data regularly, it is sometimes hard for users to determine what exactly they’ve given corporations permission to sell and/or have access to.

One of the biggest tech companies in the world today, Facebook/Meta, has regularly been at the front of personal privacy conversations. From using device microphones to simply selling information users agree to, the topics are truly limitless.

While it can be argued that Meta could have and should have already taken more steps to ensure user privacy, it never hurts to start now. Better late than never is more than a saying, especially with user privacy.

Most recently, Meta has vowed to add end-to-end encryption by default for all user conversations through Facebook Messenger. End to end encryption is an important security measure that basically means only the sender and recipient can read/view the messages. This is a massive step for user privacy and their comfortability communicating with friends and family on the platform. Also, it appears other user privacy measures have been taken and even more will be in the future for all Meta messaging platforms including WhatsApp and Instagram.

While it is likely not wise to discuss anything too personal on a social media website, there are many topics that can be discussed through social messaging and users who use these tech platforms (specifically the direct messaging feature) deserve the right to know their conversation will stay between them.

User privacy and rights on tech platforms will continue to be a regular topic of discussion and I look forward to seeing other large tech companies follow Meta in improving the privacy and peace of mind of their users.
